On queries related to help with naked eye skygazing

  • Are there any resources (tutorials) for naked eye astronomy? -- Atul Asthana, Fri Mar 14, 2008 10:25 am

Atul, I am sure, there will be many resources made available, on different websites of the members. Give me a week's time, I am planning on something very specific related to giving very simple help for naked eye sky gazing as well as a thumb rule help for quantifying light pollution from different locations.

I say a week - maybe - it could be a little more than a week before I could put that up :-)

Rathnasree, Fri Mar 14, 2008 10:47 am

mam i think AAAD will be doing something on International Sidewalk Astronomy Day Night and Yuri's night (both on 12th April 2008 Saturday) may be something in the planetarium itself most probably it it will be an evening observation

raghu kalra, Fri Mar 14, 2008 10:56 am

Yes, Raghu, of course. One is active live help, the kind that Amateur Astronomers provide with such dedication, as in the event that you are mentioning.

In addition, I was also thinking of providing simple horizon views in different directions for different seasons (for a specific location, of course) - On request, these can be provided for any location.

There is a lot of software help freely available, to befriend the skies, Atul. Try the simplest ones to begin with, like skyglobe. Just type "skyglobe" and "download" in google, that would help find it.

I am also thinking that horizon views - the sky looking at North, South, East and West or other combinations (at specific times)- would be an added help, to begin with. It is these horizon views (for different times, for Delhi) and putting them together on the website, that will take me some time. If anyone else would also do that on their websites (for different locations) and post with the link here, it would be very useful.

Rathnasree Fri Mar 14, 2008 11:11 am

Dear Rathna madam, I would be glad to do this much. Please let me know what time and which locations you need pictures of the horizon. I would make screenshots from Stellarium or Cartes software and post somewhere. Also if there is anything else related required?

all of you can download the oftfare cartes du ceil

the link is http://www.stargazing.net/astropc/download.html

it is an awesone software for it will be helpfull for u to identify stars and constilations

raghu kalra AAAD, Fri Mar 14, 2008 3:29 pm

Hello,

Where exactly in J&K do you stay? If we could have the latitude and longitude of the location (we can check that from the name of the town) - it would be possible to make some simple horizon views of skies from your location - with special emphasis on finding the planets.

Amar has volunteered to help with such horizon views, so please do post giving us your location.

Amar, if you could create useful horizon views for this location (as well as Atul's location - Atul whatis your location?) - for the spring equinox evening and place them on your website - linking to this group - just mention that you have created these views arising from queries in this group.

Rathnasree, Nehru Planetarium, New Delhi, Sat Mar 15, 2008 4:18 am

For a beginner id suggest the sky and telescope website s interactive map where u can feed the location and time. The map is much simpler .I started from there.

Thanks

Hello every one, For me this is the best way to enjoy our nature instead of using scopes, and in this I find many desktop planetarium softwares available freely. The one I like the most is stellarium availble for windows, mac and linux. It gives a 3d view with lot of fasilities for new users like star names, costellation names and figures and the artistic constellation images are also available in this. One can choose any given location on earth with atm on or off to reduce or increase the light polution accordingly.

Do give a try to this.

One other software for little advance user and only available for linux platform is kstars.

It can provide you the simulation sky with the facility of getting data of any given object in any available wavelenght, only if you have an active internet connection. It will download that data it self from any of one virtual observatory and more over it can be connected to most of the goto telescopes for easy use.

I hope you find this information useful

Dear Friends / Members

To create more awareness on Astronomy Science, we, from Tamil Nadu Astronomy Association, Chennai, are organizing Night Sky Watching Programs at different schools for students. It is purely a free program we are organizing, with full support of Dr.P.Iyyamperumal, Excutive Director of BM Birla Planetarium, Adyar, Chennai.

It is noted that only students from cities are enjoying the facilities. The school and students from villages are not coming forward to invite us and utilize our free service. We wants to go to villages and create more awareness on astronomy and science among the students. we therefore requesting the members of this group, from Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka or from Kerala , to organize and utilize our services for the students from villages.

For further more details, please feel free to contact, T.S.Krishna moorthy, Tamil Nadu Astronomy Association, Chennai.
