Public Lecture and interaction with a NASA Scientist

Nehru Planetarium, Nehru Memorial Museum and Library, in collaboration with the Amateur Astronomers Association, Delhi, is organizing a public lecture and interaction with NASA Scientist Dr. Krishen Kumar, at the sky theater of the planetarium at 12:30 PM on the 5th of June 2011.

Dr. Krishen Kumar is the ST Senior Scientist / Lead Technologist for the Advanced Planning Office, NASA Johnson Space Center (JSC), Houston, Texas, responsible for developing strategies for joint research and technology projects and plans with industries, universities, other NASA centers, and government agencies.

Dr. Krishen Kumar’s lecture will deal with the themes of the challenge of human space exploration, the technology needs for space exploration, and the transfer of space technology for commercial applications for economic and human development.

Dr. Krishen Kumar says "Living in space continues to unfold unique insights into human physiology and psychology as a result of the role of gravity, living in relatively small closed space, limitations on diet and other consumables, stress and strains caused by isolated living and possible failure of systems, and limited recreation and relaxation. The countermeasures that will be developed to make humans healthy and productive in space will find immediate applications here on Earth." This side of the story of human space exploration is not always well publicised and these aspects to be discussed in Dr. Krishen Kumar's talk would be of interest to all space enthusiasts.

The lecture and interaction is open to all. The event will also be webcast live and the link for the webcast is http://www.ustream.tv/channel/krittika

The planetarium is also organizing a number of summer lectures in the sky theater. These summer lectures will have the unique feature of being projected against the planetarium sky with visuals in full dome format. Astronomers and scientists from the National Center for Radio Astrophysics, Pune, Indian Institute of Astrophysics, Bangalore, the Aryabhata Institute for Observational Sciences, Nainital, Delhi University and Vigyan Prasar, will be giving these summer lectures which will also be webcast and made available on Youtube for student reference. There will be a talk on Radio pulsars by Dr. Dipanjan Mitra, on the 4th of June, a talk on the Realm of Galaxies by Prof. Tushar Prabhu, a talk on Gamma Ray bursts by Prof. S.N. Pandey, talks on works of Prof. Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar, and many more. These summer lectures will be followed by monthly public lectures by astronomers with visuals in full dome format – a format that has been found to be very exciting by the many students who have been attending such lectures in the recent past, at the planetarium.
