Chandra - A stellar life

The Nehru Planetarium, New Delhi, is being renovated with a New Planetarium Machine, New Exhibition, and New Programs and Activities. The renovation and upgradation of the planetarium, including the purchase of the new machine, and installation of new exhibits, is being undertaken by the National Council of Science Museums, as a turnkey project. The new programs and activities, following the renovation, are being planned and implemented by the Nehru Planetarium, New Delhi.

The Nehru Planetarium, New Delhi, will be reopened to the public in October 2010, following the inauguration of the new show Chandra - A stellar life which will be shown to the public using the newly installed hybrid projector at the planetarium.

The celebrations of the International Year of Astronomy are going to be followed immediately by countrywide activities related to the centenary celebrations of Nobel Laureate Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar, who was born on the 19th of October 1910.

The script writing in English and translation to Hindi, of the new planetarium program "Chandra - A stellar Life" has been completed and work is underway to complete the program with audio and video support in time for the October inauguration of the new machine at the Nehru Planetarium, New Delhi.

The inauguration of this new planetarium program will be at 4:00 PM on the 2nd of October 2010.

The Nehru Planetarium, New Delhi, held a screening of Enrico Agapito's film on Chandrasekhar, in November 2009. Prof. Amitabh Mukherjee and Prof. Patrick Das Gupta from the Delhi University were invited as panelists to initiate discussions, following the screening of the film, and answer student's questions on the works of Chandrasekhar.

On the 28th of February, 2010, the National Science Day, Prof. Patrick Das Gupta, Department of Physics and Astrophysics, Delhi University, gave a talk titled "Truth and Beauty in Chandrasekhar's work" at the planetarium.
