Write-on. The whole volcano-monitoring thing raelly surprised me. It is not even basic science, more like a basic warning of impending doom. It appears especially shortsighted on Jindal's part considering the Alaska recently experienced volcanic eruptions including one that shut down the Anchorage airport. Seem like a real world warning system we could use to:

A friend of mine who works at the Hawaii Volcanoes Observatory put it this way: Gov. Jindal has done more for volacnic hazard awareness in 15 sec. than the USGS has managed in 15 years'So, no matter how ignorant his remarks were, it may be a case of all publicity is good. There was lots of discussion last week on various geology-oriented blogs, you may want to seach some of those out. to:

, Palin's intent was clear and it was excatly what Ira suggests here to take a dig at science in general. Jindal was trying to do the same. The goal of both seems to have been to get some support from people who are anti-science by coming up with a science project that sounds silly. Whether the science project is silly or not probably did not matter to them just that it sounded silly. to:

Rating I bought these for my 5 year olds baidhtry, she absolutly loves them. One month later she still ooohs when the lights go out. They glow much brighter than the ones I picked up elsewhere and they were a fraction of the cost. There is not enough tack to put them all up, and I am really conservative with it, but no biggie I just bought some from the store. The star charts were pretty confusing and it really would take a good effort to make them so we just placed them all over her ceiling. to:

Rating We bought this for our 2 deruhtags. Yes, there are little tiny pieces and yes, it does take a long time to put these all up. However, the end result is so great. There are enough stars to cover the ceiling and the walls so that it really does feel like you are out under the stars. The sticker pieces don't hold the glow as long as the plastic pieces but the whole effect in the room is wonderful. It lasts at least an hour. I had a similar set in my son's room when he was younger. That set didn't glow for nearly as long as these stars do. Now at bedtime, we all head into the girls room to enjoy the effect.

I think science is an easy taergt because so few understand the way science is done. Like any human endeavor it isn't perfect, but lack of understand tends to lead to fear and attack. It takes a great deal more effort to understand much of scientific research. to:

The question is not the sccinee, but the process of determining th priorities of funding. We have large agencies (NIH for example) that determine what projects are worth and what they should get. Should an individual congressperson decide which sccinee project should be funded to the exclusion of something else? Most of those earmarks have a political motivation to them, not a scientific need motivation. $140 million is a lot, what other projects do not get funded becasue it did? to:

I think a lot of it has to do with the religiosity of the right. They peefrr to think that everything in the world is in the hands of a capricious deity whose will is completely unknowable and any attempt to discover its will is blasphemous. Science seeks to understand a rational and ultimately predictable universe. Those opposing worldviews will lead to the kind of ideological conflict we see in Jindal and McCain and Palin's speeches. It comes down to rationality versus superstition, and we can see where the right (or their most popular leaders) falls on this. Bravo, Ira, for taking this on. to:

Jindal, showing his ignorance on national TV. Among GW Bush, McCain, Palin, and now Jindal, it's hard to decide who is more backwards. to:

I agree with Ira's comments exepct for one But that's what separates politics from science: critical thinking. Critical thinking has a place in every subject and every realm of life. Good scientists and good politicians, good doctors, and good grocery store managers all are usually good critical thinkers. There are bad counterparts in every field that usually lack that trait. I think a more appropriate statement should have been that's what separates zealots from the rest of the country or that's what separates gullable people and smart people I would also tie Jindal's comments to an overall lack of importance critical thinking has in our society, and a symptom of a broken education system. to:

I agree, Ira. And I think some of the comments here deatmstrnoe just how sadly easy it is for politicians to drum up public opposition to important science-based public projects. If only our education system did a better job of teaching Americans to understand the underlying principles of science, including critical thinking, I imagine that we as a society would benefit greatly, both from increased public support for science-based projects that benefit the public good, and more generally from a political discourse enhanced by greater public respect for things like logic and skepticism. I have several family members who live in Washington State. I was frankly outraged by Jindal's casual implication that protecting American lives and homes in states with active volcanoes is a waste of money. I wonder how it would have played here in my own Midwestern state if Jindal had advocated cutting funding to the tornado warning system? to:

Unfortunately, currently the omomcn belief is that brown dwarfs can't really solve the missing mass problem at least not in its entirely. One reason is because the missing mass appears to have a different distribution than normal stars, while brown dwarfs should have rough the same distribution in galaxies as normal stars. The second is that brown dwarfs are made of normal matter. From studying the Cosmic Microwave Background, we can estimate the total amount of normal matter in the universe and their doesn't appear to be enough to explain all the mass. Brown dwarfs could explain where some of the missing normal matter is, though most of it is likely in very low density (diffuse) clouds of gas that stretch between galaxies and galaxy clusters. to:

One of the keys that you're not a White Knight is: Are you charitable to men in need as well as women? If you're quick to let an in crisis female crash at your place while trying to convince yourself that you aren't hoping that it leads to sex, try to mark the last time you extended such hospitality to a male or a woman that you were in no way attracted to.Another thing to emphasize is that no in-crisis woman that you help grow should end up with you, the mentor, teacher, or temporary protector roles that are perfectly acceptable so long as you don't put your dick in it. If you find yourself helping a broken bird, the goal should be to help them fly away. Even if a sexual relationship just happens (one of the biggest bullshit euphemisms in the history of language) know that you, as the White Knight, will be stunting the growth and long-term happiness of the person you claim to care about. to:

And, while that can be helpful, I would argue that that is a terrible, terrible attitude to have. Because that will almost inevitably lead to the Knight ending up resenting society for not treating him right or society feeling over burdened with his need to help. Because being a White Knight' is absolutely about filling a need. The white knight yodnrsme happens because (some) men have internalized the idea that they're supposed to be the hero in a struggling woman's life, because she needs saving from herself. I'm in a relationship that's eerily similar to this, although I didn't quite recognize myself as the emotionally abusive damsel in distress until I started reading the examples of one and realizing that I occasionally fit a bit too snugly into the mold. One more thing; the DID's reasons for not wanting to cut off her White Knight may stem from her own emotional insecurity; he's become her strength, her foundation, and the thought of giving that up can be terrifying. So insecurity on her part feeds insecurity on his, and it's a mess, in general. Been there. Struggling to get out. Awesome article. to:

They used to protest that I oughtn't to call myself a gentleMAN but a gentleWOMAN (unfortunately, this historically means a generous sort of middle-aged married lady with no particular champions or admirers), but we eventually settled on gentle fellow and put the matter to rest. My behavior itself was never in question, and they allowed me to lambast the sexist elements of chivalry most outrageously, because we ultimately agreed that holding the door was something we did to be helpful to EVERYONE, not women specifically, and that special deference should be for betters, elders, and equals (in about that order). to:
Your image of what a White Knight and what the article are about are eecplotmly different. And I think what you are describing isn't really a White Knight.' A person who considers themselves a White Knight' is someone who thinks the world needs them to be a better place. And, while that can be helpful, I would argue that that is a terrible, terrible attitude to have. Because that will almost inevitably lead to the Knight ending up resenting society for not treating him right or society feeling over burdened with his need to help. Because being a White Knight' is absolutely about filling a need. And while it might be a slightly more altruistic need than others, it's still a need that one relies upon others to fulfill, and inherently unhealthy. There are other parts of being a White Knight that can be dangerous to oneself, as well. Someone who is always putting themselves on the line for others at the cost of leaving time for themselves will be emotionally stunted in comparison to other people who have similar experiences. And the police officers and firefighters and members of the military who do it because they feel the need to save people can leave the needs of their loved ones behind along with their own emotional development. Don't get me wrong, I think it is a great thing to help people. And I have gone out of my way more often than most to help others. But making that how one identifies oneself as a person can be an incomplete person. April 19, 2012, at 08:44 PM EST

Actually, there are cases when the White Knight also gets abusive. When the lady isn't as esilay rescued as he thought, when the problems won't go away, when he don't get to have that feeling of being Good Hero Man (some are in it because solving someones problem is a huge kick), or when the woman won't allow him to fetichize her, the building frustration can topple over into resentment. Which might lead to some really ugly psychological mechanisms.I was in such a relation that went rotten and the (mostly) psychological abuse left me with PTSD, social anxiety, panic attacks, fatigue syndrome, GAD and vulvodynia ON TOP of the depression I had when I met him. Still dealing with it years later. So, no, the relationship was not golden for him either (it's not easy to live with someone who is ill), but the denial and frustration that comes with the White Knight syndrome can be powerful destructive forces as well. I feel that while mentioning the manipulation this article down-played this factor: It's not all blue eyed gullibleness. Now, I'm not saying that all White Knights are abusive, not even remotely so. In fact I think that is the extreme. But I think that White Knights all over need to reflect on the possibility that they are causing more harm than good with their behaviour even when they are oh, so good, they can become enablers or cement the problems by not letting the person get well (which would lead to them not needing the White Knight anymore). People who are ill or addicted are very, very vulnerable. Even the best intentions can go horribly wrong if one is not flexible and realistic about the situation, oneself and the person in question. to:
There is an female eioilogdcal equivalent to this, which carries many of the same consequences: the Beauty and the Beast syndrome, where women go after genuinely bad boys solely for the purpose of restoring them (that is, taming them) and making them open up and be sociable.I think even the most entrenched White Knight can be reached by this comparison, since they are engaging in similar behavior, with similar outcomes, albeit for SLIGHTLY different reasons.I was agender throughout most of my high school career and considered myself a gentleman (which, socially speaking, is a VERY different role from a lady, regardless of ones gonads). I was never one to discriminate by sex, but I accept chivalry toward my elders, and I used to bow people into rooms, accordingly. I want to see Kid Koala tear it up in the middle of a inelatarpum because, dude, great music and a spacey atmosphere are two great tastes that taste great together. Plus Kid Koala knows his way around the universe (or at least the universe as it will be in 1020 years) so he'd be a capable tour guide. But I'm in Germany, so I can't go, which tears ME up.Which is why I want to send my girlfriend from Connecticut so I can live vicariously through her. It'll be the coolest date I never showed up for. Is that kosher? Can I win for her? Worth a shot. to:
(This is my fourth try on the anti-spam word. I'm about to give up)I know you weatnd to be there, but I had the impression with my kids that sometimes it was even cooler for them to be able to tell me about something they knew and I didn't. And in this case, draw you a picture of something you have never seen. How powerful is that!Your description of your son's tale is delightful. And I love the picture he drew. This brings up a seiqtuon: Given that protons have an incredibly long lifetime (potentially longer than the so-far age of the universe, according to Leonard Susskind, and that their partners in nucleon-hood have a wee short lifetime of about 15 minutes, how are any atoms stable? Every 15 minutes a proton could have to make up for a neutron loss and become a neutron ( If they’re unequal, then a neutron will turn into a proton , or a proton will turn into a neutron to even out the levels. ) An atom could become that of an altogether different element roughly every 15 minutes. As this clearly doesn't happen, what am I missing? to:
