Atul, I am sure, there will be many resources made available, on
different websites of the members. Give me a week's time, I am
planning on something very specific related to giving very simple help
for naked eye sky gazing as well as a thumb rule help for quantifying
light pollution from different locations.

I say a week - maybe - it could be a little more than a week before I
could put that up :-)

mam i think AAAD will be doing something on International Sidewalk Astronomy Day Night and Yuri's night (both on 12th April 2008 Saturday) may be something in the planetarium itself most probably it it will be an evening observation

Yes, Raghu, of course. One is active live help, the kind that Amateur
Astronomers provide with such dedication, as in the event that you are
mentioning.

In addition, I was also thinking of providing simple horizon views in
different directions for different seasons (for a specific location,
of course) - On request, these can be provided for any location.

There is a lot of software help freely available, to befriend the
skies, Atul. Try the simplest ones to begin with, like skyglobe. Just
type "skyglobe" and "download" in google, that would help find it.

I am also thinking that horizon views - the sky looking at North,
South, East and West or other combinations (at specific times)- would
be an added help, to begin with. It is these horizon views (for
different times, for Delhi) and putting them together on the website,
that will take me some time. If anyone else would also do that on
their websites (for different locations) and post with the link here,
it would be very useful.

know what time and which locations you need pictures of the horizon.
I would make screenshots from Stellarium or Cartes software and post

i live in jammu J&K STATE.i have retired as a senior engineer.my
lifelong wish was to identify the night planets first and then other
prominent stars.could any one in the group advice and guide me.

later i would like to purchase a telescope (not very expensive) and
watch the stars.again any advice?

Where exactly in J&K do you stay? If we could have the latitude and
longitude of the location (we can check that from the name of the
town) - it would be possible to make some simple horizon views of
skies from your location - with special emphasis on finding the planets.

Amar has volunteered to help with such horizon views, so please do
post giving us your location.

Amar, if you could create useful horizon views for this location (as
well as Atul's location - Atul whatis your location?) - for the spring
equinox evening and place them on your website - linking to this group
- just mention that you have created these views arising from queries
in this group.

For a beginner id suggest the sky and telescope website s interactive map
where u can feed the location and time.The map is much simpler .I started
from there.

For me this is the best way to enjoy our nature instead of using scopes,
and in this I find many desktop planetarium softwares available
freely. The one I like the most is stellarium availble for windows,
mac and linux. It gives a 3d view with lot of fasilities for new users
like star names, costellation names and figures and the artistic
constellation images are also available in this. One can choose any
given location on earth with atm on or off to reduce or increase the
light polution accordingly.

Do give a try to this.

One other software for little advance user and only available for
linux platform is kstars.

It can provide you the simulation sky with the facility of getting
data of any given object in any available wavelenght, only if you have
an active internet connection. It will download that data it self from
any of one virtual observatory and more over it can be connected to
most of the goto telescopes for easy use.
