This paper describes a study of correlation between the area lit by anthropogenic visible-near infrared emissions and variables such as population, gross domestic product and electric power consumption for 21 countries. The area lit is defined as area which had detectable lights in at least 10 % of the cloud free observations. The relationship between area lit and population on a log scale was generally linear but presented some outliers (countries with poor developed economies). The relationship between area lit and GPD or electric power consumption was stronger (R square of 0.97 and 0.96). The results indicate that the local level of economic development must be factored into the apportionment of the world population based on the lights dataset.
